Clunking/Rattle noise

I've noticed a metal on metal type noise coming from my grom lately. It's loud enough to hear with my helmet on and I can feel it through the foot pegs. Happens mostly in 1st and 2nd gear when braking and accelerating.

First started becoming apparent after I cleaned the oil spinner and put on a new rear tire. Initially, I thought it was the rear hub but it feels solid and I can't duplicate the noise with the bike turned off. Now I'm starting to think something is floating around in the right side engine case. I've also put on a mnnthbox rear sprocket (+2) but that feels solid as well.

Looking for some suggestions or ideas before I buy another new gasket and take the right side engine cover back off. Thanks ya'll.

Took the rear wheel off and checked the hub. Everything seemed correct per the manual.

Went for a ride and it's no better, possibly getting worse.

So I guess the next step is order a couple of gaskets and take off the right side cover.

I used blue threadlock on the 3 bolts. Hoping one didn't work it's way loose.

I had a weird noise when I down shifted from 4th to 3rd a couple times. Almost like metal shavings getting into the clutch plates. As soon as I let the clutch out it went away. I havent heard it lately. I would take it in if its still happening and see what they do under warranty.

Went for a short ride today and captured the noise a few times starting around 4 seconds in to the first video clip. Almost certain it is coming from the rear/exterior of the bike and not the engine case.

Does it look like the chain free-play is excessive? Just re-measured the slack and it's 35mm but I was wondering if the noise could be the chain slapping?

Yeah, this was one of the first things I figured was causing the issue. Went back and double-checked the manual and I believe I have the spacers correctly installed. The spacer with the skinnier shoulder is on the right side with the skinny end up against the rear brake bracket.

Are you running stock chain... I had my chain starting binding on few links and had strech on few spots only, and it was causing noise and vibrations ... Check the tension of the chain, then spin the rear wheel a 1/4 turn and check tention again ,keep doing that until the chain makes 1 revolution. The chain tension should be the same.. If it gets tighter or looser you will need a new chain..

The stock chain was replaced when I put the +2 tooth rear sprocket on. I replaced it with the same DID chain as stock. Thinking I will pick up a new one and maybe spring for a higher quality option.

Thanks for the responses. I'll post an update after changing the chain.

Last night I put on a new chain and went 1 link bigger (107 links) than stock which puts the axle much closer to the center of the adjustment slots in the swingarm.

Unfortunately, the noise is still occurring. My next step is going to be removing the mnnthbx 36 tooth sprocket and putting the stock back on to see if that's stops the issue. I sure hope so because this is really starting to drive me crazy!

Couple of other things I've brainstormed while laying awake in bed at night....

  • the sound seems like it could be coming from the adjusters inside the swingarm
  • it also sounds similar to the noise I can create by moving the rear caliper back and forth

Any other ideas as to what could be causing this noise?

Yes, I made sure to check for the rubber dampers when I took the rear wheel off recently. The way the noise sounds made me immediately think this might be what was causing the issue, but alas, all seemed normal in the hub.

I can't get the bike to make the sound when it's up on a stand and I spin the rear wheel or when I walk the bike around. Only seems to happen when it's running. However, it doesn't appear to matter if it's in gear or not. If I'm coasting up to a stop in neutral it can still be heard at times.

Thanks, yeah, I did just recently do an oil change and cleaned the spinner for the first time. I've ordered 2 new gaskets (engine case and oil spinner) but I'm still waiting on them to arrive. I think my next step is to drain the oil and check inside the engine case. I'd like to wait for the gaskets to arrive just in case they need to be replaced. A threadlocking agent was used on the 3 bolts so I would be surprised if one worked it's way loose. At this point though, I wouldn't rule it out...that dang noise has to be coming from somewhere! I really appreciate everyone's input.

Side note:
Since installing the new chain the noise does seem to be occurring less frequently.
